By the end of the story, the narrator is determined to free the woman in the wallpaper. The narrator comes to identify with the wallpaper, to the point that she believes she should be trapped within it.

The narrator doesn't trust Jennie and misleads her. She simply wants Jennie to go away, so she can finish stripping the wallpaper herself. She's actually frightened that Jennie will touch it. In essence, we see that the narrator still has the capacity to mislead those around her, as Jennie accepts her explanation without question.

In regard to John, the narrator is focused upon proving she's not crazy by trapping the woman, so that he can see for himself. Tying herself up with the rope and freeing the woman, who at this point becomes the narrator herself, is a statement of freedom. In the concluding paragraph, the narrator tells John she's been successful despite his part in keeping her entrapped.
