What did Gilman intend the story to do?

Gilman wrote The Yellow Wallpaper in order to expose the dangers of the "rest treatment cure" she herself was forced to endure. Her greatest desire was to protect women from suffering the oppression and isolation of Weir Mitchell’s treatment.
