John, the narrator’s husband, freely embraces his role as superior to women. He embodies the patriarchal elitism over women in that era. As a physician, he sees women's emotions as trivial and hysteric. John seeks to curb the narrator’s creative outlets. He “prescribes” a “rest cure” by locking her in a nursery at their summer house.
