Janie realizes that her marriage to Logan is a complete failure, her dream is dead. Janie escapes in her comfortable images of nature. This includes "a stallion rolling in the blue pasture of ether". The stallion becomes a metaphor for the cycle of birth and creation, just as women are as well. She is frustrated that she must do this in an awful loveless marriage.
