Janie has to come to grips with not only the hurricane but her life. The storm in fact can be seen as a metaphor of her life. With each husband came a different storm. Each time she would take up with a new man, disaster follows. The storm is Janie's final reckoning. She sees the devastation and knows she must somehow build her life again, except this time differently.
