Most of the widows in town were poor and alone. Janie, however, had property. People cautioned her about marrying someone who was only out to get her money, and yet, they also expected her to marry..... it seems it was unacceptable for her to be alone. From the text, we can infer that Janie, as a woman, was considered inept in the business department. They saw as ger as needing a husband's guidance.
