At first, Janie allows Jody to dominate, bully, and demean her. She is silent and accepting. Janie doesn't, however, continue to tolerate being the submissive wife for long. Over time, Janie begins to rebel and fight back, and eventually, her marriage unravels. Janie's emasculation of her husband reflects the abuse she's lived with for so long. Janie, however, gains strength through it all, whereas, Jody weakens and loses his own.
