How have Janie's overalls come to be a symbol of her identity? What do you think they represent to her?

In addition to her hair, a new symbol of Janie's identity is her overalls. She wears overalls to the funeral: "She went on in her overalls. She was too busy feeling grief to dress like grief." She also wears them home to Eatonville when she returns. The overalls are also a symbol of equality between Janie and Tea Cake. Overalls are what the men wore while they were working in the fields. Janie did not want to be thought of anything else but the people who work the fields and of course people like Tea Cake.
