Self Identification

Janie's self identity changes drastically as the novel progresses, making it rather difficult to answer this simply. She regularly struggles with society in an attempt to gain self identification and to distance herself from what she considered the stereotypical role of black women. She wanted independence, and with her grandmother's support she embarks on a journey that her grandmother hopes will give both social and financial security.

Janie's journey isn't always easy. She experiences love, joy, sorrow; she also experienced these things during three marriages. In the end she finds strength, independence, and most importantly of all inner peace. The ending isn't exactly a happy one, but you'll have to read the book and find that out for yourself!
