On page two of TEWWG, the vernacular changes. The narrator of the story "speaks" in formal English. Then the narrator introduces the townspeople, and their speech is very different from our narrator's. It's the vernacular of the deep, country South- "Words walking without masters; walking altogether like harmony in a song."
