Their Eyes Were Watching God

What literary techniques does Hurston use to put out her message that "Jaine has found that she must live for herself in order to be self-fulfilled?"

The study guide says that the main theme of this book is that one must live for themself to be happy in life. So, I was wondering what literary techiques Hurston uses to send the reader this message. I have to write a really long essay and I am really hoping you will answer this qustion so that I can write my essay on that literary technique.

Please Answer!! Thank You!

The theme of the novel is summarized by Janie in three sentences: "you got tuh go there tuh know there...Two things everybody got tuh do fuh theyselves. They got tuh go tuh God, and they got tuh find out about livin' fuh theyselves." These sentences empower direct action by all people, women and men alike. Janie has found that she must live for herself in order to be self-fulfilled.
