s Janie walks through town, the women gawk in envy and scorn. The women are angry that she does not stop and explain herself. Only Pheoby Watson, Janie's old best friend, defends Janie's silence saying that maybe her story is not for their ears, or maybe she has nothing to tell. Pheoby leaves the women to take some supper to Janie. Of course Janie has lived many different lives that these women would not understand. They are secretly jealous and would find fault no matter what Janie's story is.
