This is a very hard question to answer, and because we can't ever really know why Daniel does what he does, we are forced to make inferences about his behavior. I respect that Daniel took H.W. in and raised him as his own. Is he a wonderful father? No. Does he put H.W. before everything else? Definitely not. Daniel does, however, keep H.W. close, he tries to teach him the family business and how to handle negotiations. He makes H.W. an important part of the community.
On the other hand, when H.W. is injured, his father becomes distant. Does this happen because H.W. is no longer a part of his plans? I don't think so. If anything, it simply seems as is Daniel has no idea how to handle the situation, so he pulls away. When Daniel sends H.W. away to school after the accident, what is the purpose? Is he trying to distance himself even more, or is he genuinely hoping that H.W. will benefit from the schooling and be able to somewhat return and take part in what Daniel had planned for him. I don't think these questions were answered, but I do think they are things we are meant to question... things to keep us hanging.
