Imo The flashback scene with HW trying to play with Daniel, and he literally just pushed him away, then start walking towards the oil rig is what really ends this scene well. He had choosen business over family.

I think that is a correct interpretation. Daniel does literally push his boy away and loses himself in his oil business.
