Achebe does not depict the superstitions of the Igbo as being necessarily true, but he does show that their religious beliefs often contain uncanny insights. Okonkwo takes superstition at face value. He refuses to interpret what he hears rather than act on whatever will make him look strong. This is one reason why he so needlessly kills his stepson Ikemefuna.
