Explain Okonkwo’s use of figurative language when he says, “Living fire begets cold, impotent ash.” (What is he talking about, and why does he use that figurative language?)

I think Okonkwa is finally gaining some insight into how his own behavior affects others. He sees that he has lost his son Nwoye to the Christians and that he no longer holds the respect of his family. Okonkwa sees that his "roaring fire" (a personification) has resulted in the coldness his life has become.
