When the tribal leaders were taken, the District Commissioner gave orders that they were to be treated with respect. Whether his orders were truly meant to respectful, or if they were merely for show..... his orders were not heeded. The head messenger, who was a barber, shaved the prisoners' heads. Food and water was withheld, and the men were not allowed to go out to relieve themselves. They were abused and taunted.
