The missionaries are a mixed blessing. They do destroy the integral nature of the Igbo culture. The destruction of an ancient culture is never a good thing. On the other hand they bring hope to the marginalized and oppressed members of the tribe. Characters like Okonkwo's son Nwoye, find refuge in the Christian Church. The Church does not share the structure and gender issues of the Igbo. Okonkwo was abusive towards his son because of perceived masculine issues. Later, Nwoye converts to Christianity, in part to escape his father. His betrayal embitters and outrages Okonkwo. .
