Okonkwo sits with Obierika while Obierika bargains his daughter’s bride-price with the family of her suitor. Much of the talk has to do with varying customs from village to village. Obierika brings up the men with "skin as white as chalk". They laugh and compare this with the leper Amadi. There is a sense of foreshadowing here. The arrival of the white man will bring disintegration to their culture much like a leprosy.
