What does “diversity” mean in Nigeria as compared to another country (US, UK, etc.)?

In terms of the setting? In the 1890s, the time in which the novel is set, Nigeria saw the arrival of the white man. There was little diversity. With the arrival of the white man, Nigeria was exposed to Christianity.... and later, colonialism.
