The locusts symbolize the coming and settling of white colonists.
Fire symbolizes anger.
Animal imagery is used throughout the novel to explain human behavior and wisdom. Animals reflect the environment in an unsettled, natural world. The igbo use stories about animals to explain the unexplainable; the tortoise’s shell.
