What is the function of Obierika's statement that the white man "has put a knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen apart"?

Institutions like religion, social hierarchy, trade...are changed with the arrival of the white man. It is interesting because Achebe does not think this necessarily a bad thing. The Igbo used many of these institutions to marginalise people.
