when people ask for one another why do they respond "is that me?"
This question does not sound like it has anything to do with "Things Fall Apart."
They respond "is that me?" when someone calls for them from outside, because they believe it could be an evil spirit imitating the voice of a friend. By responding "is that me," they are not admitting their identity to an evil spirit, but their friend will understand.
