Why does Okonkwo treat his family the way he does?

As the man of the family, Okonkwo rules his home like a tyrant. He is afraid of failing..... of being like or compared to his father. Nwoye, his oldest son, shows signs of being like his father, thus, Okonkwo is very hard on him.
