Thomas Gray viewed death as inevitable for all men, The paths of glory lead but to the grave. Both powerful and poor men lead lives of activity but eventually come to the same end,
The boast of heraldry, the pomp of power,
And all that beauty, all that wealth e'er gave,
Awaits alike th' inevitable hour...
He questions whether the rich and powerful had joy in their lives as opposed to others who may have had a humble life but filled with the joys of family.
