It is winter in England and the landscape looks icy and dead. Nature is dormant except for one singing bird that sings his last breath on this icy landscape. Hardy brings up the dichotomy of nature. Life so precious cannot exist against the natural seasons. Nature has specific times for life and it is harsh on living things that do not fit into its natural rhythms.
