How did Mortenson come to be in Korphe? Did he mean to be there?

After a failed attempt to climb the Mountain K2, Mortenson gets lost and wanders into an orchard where women and children are harvesting apricots. Accompanied by tens of children, he reaches the entrance of a village. He is greeted by the chief, or nurmadhar, of the village Korphe.
