The Notoriou Jumping Frog of Calaveras Country by Mark Twain
Some of the humorous devices used by Twain in "The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" are the dialect of America's southern region, the depiction of the people in the western states as being rather stupid, whereas easterners are portrayed as educated, cultured, and far more civilized. It seems every corner of the country is at odds..... There is also the naming of Jim Smiley's pets, who are given names and personalities to match famous politicians. Twain also uses satire, exaggeration, and the ever so crafty exit of the narrator, who in the end has no wish to hear Wheeler's story out.....
In the end, Twain succeeds in entertaining the reader with a portrait of the America he knows so well, all while poking fun at the folks east and west, who are all proven to be both intelligent and gullible at the same time.
