J.

The narrator of the novel, most likely based on Jerome himself. J. has a dog named Montmorency, and two friends, George and Harris. He sees himself as intelligent, hard-working, and competent, but his behavior in the novel suggests otherwise. Like his friends, J. is a hypochondriac.

George

A good-natured banker, and one of J.'s best friends. Of the three men, he is portrayed as the only one who is seriously dedicated to his job. He brings a banjo on the boat trip and tries to learn how to play it.

Harris

A friend of George and J., who joins them on the trip. Although the novel's flashbacks suggest that J. and Harris (full name William Samuel Harris) have known each other for a long time, J. actually dislikes Harris a great deal. He constantly criticizes Harris for being lazy and uncultured, and writes that "there is no poetry about Harris – no wild yearning for the unattainable" (18).

Montmorency

J.'s lively, belligerent fox terrier. He enjoys both fighting with other dogs and hunting.

Mrs. Poppets

J.'s landlady.

Uncle Podger

J.'s accident-prone uncle, who is deceased. J. compares Harris to Uncle Podger because both of them have difficulty performing basic tasks without making mistakes.

Stivvings

J.'s former classmate, who was dedicated to his studies but was often too sick to complete his work.

Herr Slossenn Boschen, a German professor, was a musician and singer.

MAJOR CHARACTERS

JEROME KLAPKA JEROME (Jerome): The protagonist of his own classic novel as well as the narrator, he is a hypochondriac always concerned about his health. He is not so vocal and rarely takes any initiative but his presence is indispensable. He is a keen observer of persons and places. Because of his long association with river Thames, he gives a wonderful description of the people and places on the river. His sense of humour and the ability to laugh at himself is unmatched. He loves beauty and romance. He displays deep knowledge of social practices, history, food, costumes and drinks that the people of the Thames region are associated with. In fact, he has all the qualities of a professional traveller.

GEORGE WINGRAVE (George): He has been portrayed as a lazy fellow who is perfect in only one work that is sleeping. He goes to sleep from ten to four each day except Saturdays, when the narrator and Carl Hentschel (Harris) wake him up at two o' clock. He is also a hypochondriac like the others. Sometimes he appears to be very clever, though he is just reverse to it in reality.

CARL HENTSCHEL (Harris): He is happy-go-lucky man who wants to enjoy life to the brim. H ei sfond of drinking. He does not like to camp out in the rainy weather because evrything is damp and wet outside. He thinks he is the master of all trades whereas what he does is only to mess up everything. He is ever ready to take responsibilty of evrything on himself and transfer it to others people. He exhibits a poor understanding of his talent as a singer of 'comic' songs and makes a sorry picture of himself before the people who are present there. 

MONTMORENCY: The dog montmorency is a fox-terrier. The writer gives a human face to the dog. He is naturally gifted with a sharp understanding of humans, matters and situations, traits rarely found in this breed of animals. In fact, he is an important part of the three men's journey on river Thames. He is portrayed as clever and a root cause of most of the mischief and trouble. He shows traits which are not found even in some human beings.

J is the narrator of the story 'three men in a boat' and aooears to be happy-go-lucky man . he has varied shades to his character. at first he seems more of a hypochondriac who thinks that he has all the diseases of the world. he likes to be at the head of the things which is clear from his behaviour when they pack for the boat trip. J is also fond of animals and shows considerable knowledge about the things around him . like his two friends , he is also vain , but more sensible and practicle. he also has a helpful side which comes to sight in the insident of the cheese.

the narrator is a true phylosopher whose soul dwells in imagination. nature appeals to him and whatever distroys the sceney deservs his ire. the way he has written the novel shows us his presense of mind and also his humour side he never fails to attract our attention.....

Jim, or also known as Jerome K Jerome, is the narrator of the novel 'Three Men in a Boat'. He plans to go to a trip along with his friends George and Harris. he sure is a nature lover and is poetic. he thinks that he has almost all the diseases except housemaid's knee. he is intrested in ancient artifacts.
