As the three men travel toward Goring, they see a dead woman floating in the water. The woman "lay lightly" on the water, and her face was "sweet and calm". The men were happy that some other men standing along the bank of the river saw her too, and took charge of her from there. The men later learn that she committed suicide, and that she was the single moher of a small child. Without enough money to survive on, the woman had gone to friends for help to no avail.... her shame was too great for anyone to stoop so low as to help her. So she bought a ticket to Goring and took her own life in the river.
