The man's self-sufficiency is shown in his survival tactics. He keeps his food close to his body; he knows how to build a fire; he is wary of the creek and possible thin ice; he has the forethought to know the dogs carcass would enable him to burrow for warmth. Unfortunately, what he knows isn't tested. He isn't successful.... and in the end, he succumbs to the weather.
