To Build a Fire

London spends more than two opening paragraphs to describe the setting. What effect does it have on the reader?

The setting is important because as the story progresses, we see the man looking back at all the things he was told and why he should have listened. London's description of the setting would make most people turn away without thought..... thus, we see the man challenging nature, the experience of others, and the useless loss of life.
