The man is experienced in the wilderness but lacks imagination. He fails to see the possibilities that the Old Timer takes into account. The man's own hubris causes him to disregard the old man's warnings. He thinks he can make it if he follows the appropriate steps. He thinks he is strong and clever enough to outsmart nature.
