The man is arrogant, inexperienced, and foolhardy. He believes he knows what he hasn't experienced. His knowledge is limited to what he's read or studied...... rather than look around him and observe nature at its harshest, he sits back and formulates the different degrees of cold. In other words, the man has a distinct lack of common sense. As far as shaping the story.... the man is a recipe for disaster.
