To Build a Fire

The cold setting is one evident external conflict that propels the story, but what about any internal conflict? What internal conflict develops as the plot progresses?

The internal conflict, man versus self, is centered around the man's will and ability. He has the will to survive, but he does not have the capacity (strength) to survive.
