what is the character's relationship with his dog

The dog is a companion, but the man is not close to the dog. The dog is simply part of the "environment" - a dog accompanying a man going through the very cold Yukon. The dog is "smarter" than the man, but when the man dies, the dog simply leaves and finishes the trip that they have begun together.
