The story begins with the lines, "Day had broken cold and grey, exceedingly cold and grey....It was a clear day, and yet there seemed an intangible pall over the face of things, a subtle gloom that made the day dark." That doesn't sound like a good start to the man's journey. Nature very much plays a character here. The weather foreshadows her mood when the man ceases to respect her. As the man trudges along, the cold gets worse. Even the man's dog is trying to give him not so subtle signals to stop and make camp. The first few lines foreshadow the man's destiny should he not heed her warnings. Men, despite their sheepskin gloves and tenacity, are no match for nature.
