1) He hasn't prepared himself for the cold (proper attire, supplies, ect.)
2) he neglects to watch and check the ice or even to follow the instinctual movements of the dog while crossing. Getting soaked was bad news
3) he paid no attention to where he built his fire....... right under a snowy tree wasn't exeactly precautionary.
