What role does the dog play in this story?

The dog's role is to illustrate the distinction between instinct and perceived intelligence. The dog survives instinctually..... he wants to stay away from the water, sleeps near the fire, burrows deep in the snow for warmth, feels danger, and observes the changes in the man as he grows evermore unsure and panicked by his circumstances.
