Where in the story does the man first become aware of danger of the cold?

The man first becomes aware of the real dangers of the cold when he starts his fire under a tree, and it is quickly snuffed out by the snow. In attempting to rebuid the fire, he is afraid for the first time, and he acknowledges that the old-timer who'd given him advice was right.
