why did the author make the man and the dog as traveling companions?

The man was traveling alone, the dog was his companion. In making the two companions, London was able to illustrate the reactions of instinct, as opposed to the actions of learned behavior. The dog's survival instinct was far superior to what the man believed himself capable..... and proved it by being the lone survivor.
