Why wasn't the man able to successfully build a fire on his third attempt?

After the melting snow from the tree falls on his fire, he attempts one last one. He is too frozen to light the matches. His fingers do not work.

Well, when he gets the fire going, why does it go out?

He does light a fire but he makes the mistake of lighting it under a tree. The tree's snow melts and puts out his fire.

No that's how the second one got put out. Are his frozen fingers the reason the third one wasn't successful?

Yes, he tries to use his mouth to light the matches but it doesn't work.
