From Tom's presence and testimony on the witness stand, we can easily see what kind of man he is. Tom is honest, caring, helpful, and considerate. Although Tom cannot gracefully extricate himself from Mayella's grasp, he also knows what the repurcussions with be if he's seen with her.... he knows that as a black man, that repurcussion would likely mean death.
