To Kill a Mockingbird

At the top of page 55, Scout says, "Jem fielded Dill's fly with his eyes shut: 'No sir, just matches.' I admired my brother: Matches were dangerous, but cards were fatal." What does she mean by this?

Scout is talking about the fact that Atticus had forbidden them to play cards.... no exceptions. Matches were going to get him into trouble, but not half as much as playing card would.
