During Aunt Alexandria's afternoon tea, Atticus arrives to tell Aunt, Calpurnia, Scout, and Maudie that Tom Robinson was shot 17 times attempting to escape from jail. They are all duly shocked, and Calpurnis leaves with Atticus to go speak with Tom's family. The others go about tea as if nothing is wrong. Background? I'm not sure what you mean?
