Femininity is portrayed through Miss Caroline, the new teacher from the city. Make-up, perfume, and being frightened of critters is alien to the children.... they find her reactions humorous to say the least. Other examples of femininity can be found in the characters of Calpurnia and Miss Maudie, who take on more traditional motherly roles.
