I am writing an essay and I need some help. My idea is that the Cunninghams are the "others" in society and therefore not accepted. Mostly its about acceptance. Can someone help me out here with ideas? Like textual support and thoughts. Thanks!!
i can see your theeory has potential. The Cunninghams are indeed 'outside' society. They are fleeting visitors to the education system as we see with Walter who often has to work on the farm rather than attend school. They are aso outside the welfare system. Unlike the Ewells, The Cunninghams always try to pay their way (as they pay Atticus in vegetables) and do not rely on state aid. In chapter 23 Atticus says -
'The Cunninghams hadn't taken anything from or off anybody since they migrated to the New World.'
