It is important to destinguish that the Ewell kids are victims to their abusive father and poor circumstances. Burris is dirty, uneducated and belligerent. The whole family lives in abject poverty and has little to eat. The white community takes pity on them but considers them "trash". Bob Ewell, the father is an evil, ignorant man who belongs to the lowest substratum of Maycomb society. He lives with his nine motherless children in a shack near the town dump.
