Atticus seems to have a strong understanding of human character and typically does not respond with any fear of any threat of reprisal. He understands that having made Ewell look like a fool in front of everyone would cause Ewell to desire revenge. However, Ewell is the kind of man who does not care against whom he gets his revenge.
