Scout describes Miss Maudie as a woman who "loved everything that grew in God's earth, even the weeds. With one exception, If she found a blade of nut grass in her yard it was like the Second Battle of the Marne" because "'one sprig of nut grass can ruin a whole yard.'"

Miss Maudie is liberal and open minded, understanding and empathetic.

Miss Stephanie is described as a gossip. She is judgmental and doesn't have an open relationship with the children, as she is condescending in her attitude toward them. She believes that children should be seen and not heard, unlike Miss Maudie, who has complete respect for the children and their curiosity.
